Making the Switch to Bamboo Cutlery
If you’re looking for an easy start to becoming part of the zero waste family and looking to reducing plastic waste in your life. Switching to bamboo cutlery is an easy way to start!
First I guess we should address the issue that you’re probably got you curious to begin with. Single use plastics.
Single use plastic cutlery is so easy to just forget. When we order take out they’re just sitting on the side for us to take without thinking for a second. Or when we order delivery and it’s already sitting in the bag. As Canadians we produce around 3M tonnes of last waste that is thrown away each year. And an even scarier number is that less than 10% of plastics used in Canada are actually recycled. Many people argue that it should be up to the companies that manufacture or sell plastics should be responsible for their plastic waste. Whilst I think it’s important, if each person cuts down their plastic consumption, we could all have a helping hand in solving this issue. Reducing unnecessary packing and having a reusable alternative is the first step towards this issue of plastic pollution especially in our oceans.
One of the easiest ways to start is by replacing your plastic cutlery with bamboo cutlery!
Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants (grass to be exact!) on earth. Bamboo only take around 3 to 5 years to reach maturity. On the contrary, trees take around 10 to 20 years to reach maturity before they are harvested. This shorter growth cycle makes for a great replacement for our slow growing forest. Bamboos absorb carbon dioxide and release 35% more oxygen than the same amount of trees. Which is a really great way to reduce your carbon footprint and help in the fight with global warming.
Bamboo cutlery can virtually be used anywhere. You can keep it in the car, throw in in your purse or backpack for any occasion. Just like you would when you keep reusable shopping bags. If you are taking a road trip and love snacking in the car? Going on a camping trip with your friends this summer? Take that as part of something essential to pack with you! All you would have to do is hand wash them in soapy water and they are good to go again.
When your bamboo cutlery has seen better days and it's at then end of its life. Feel happy knowing that you can fully decompose them. They are 100% biodegrade, and depending on the soil and climate they can fully decompose as soon as 4 months. Remember that slowly making the switch introducing one item at a time is easier than eliminating completely. Positively impact with each small step taken.
